Notes on the use of the wine glossary

The wine glossary is the largest online wine-related data base in the world. It is structured just like a classical encyclopaedia, and consists of keywords (terms) and entries (texts) that explain these keywords.

To search for keywords in the glossary, enter the desired word in the field „Keyword search“, then click onto „Display results“. The system will then search the glossary for appropriate keywords, and will display the search results. These are sorted according to relevance, i.e. the degree of correspondence, the searched-for keyword will appear first, followed by all terms, in descending order of relevance, that contain the keyword. The entry of search terms is not case sensitive, and special symbols or forms of letters need not be considered, e.g. a search for „cote du rhone“ will lead to a result, as will a specific search for „Côtes du Rhône“. In many cases, small typographical errors will be tolerated, as the system provides synonyms.

Should the searched-for keyword not be found in the glossary, an appropriate message will be displayed. If you have entered several words for your search, and no glossary entry was found for them, you can display results for each individual keyword entered, for example, if you have entered „Piesporter Juffer“ (which would be incorrect for a single vineyard site on the Mosel river), you can view the results for „Piesporter“ (related to the town of Piesport, which has different sites) and for „Juffer“ (which is a site designation in other towns).

The glossary has a self-learning function, as every unsuccessful search is recorded, and the author notified. Each unsuccessful attempt is checked, and the possibility investigated of adding this keyword to the glossary.

If you would like to display all the keywords that begin with a specific initial letter, you may use the Letter Bar for this. Some notes on the use of this: the keywords are presented in alphabetic order, as they are written, regardless of their pronunciation or meaning. Keywords consisting of several independent words, whether they are joined by hyphens or not, are treated as a single conjoined word. This means that punctuation or special symbols such as spaces, hyphens, full stops. Commas, apostrophes and accents are ignored for the purpose of sorting. Umlauts (Ă„, Ă– and Ăś) are treated as their basic form. i.e. the normal letters (A, O and U); the German sharp S (Ăź) is treated as a double S (ss). Should you not find a specific word under C, please also look under K and Z nach; the same applies to Ch under Dsch and Tsch, F under Ph, J under Y, Sch under Ch and Sh as well as V under W (and vice versa in each case).

All texts in red are hyperlinks to the corresponding keywords.

Contents of wine glossary

The Wein-Plus Glossary contains entries related to more than 16,000 keywords. There are descriptions of more than 1,500 grape varieties, more than 1,500 wine estates with their wines, more than 10,000 terms related to vineyards, viticulture, wine and vinification, around 100 countries, including their wine-growing history and wine regions as well as more than 500 famous personalities directly related to wine. Anybody interested in history is also sure to find interesting items, as wine is associated with many true occurrences, anecdotes and legends, which can be found elaborated on under many keywords.
