The most important grape varieties
The Italy Region (Italian Abruzzi) with capital L'Aquila is in the middle of the boot east of Rome, with an approximately 130-kilometer Coast. It is divided into the provinces of Chieti, L'Aquila, Teramo and Pescara. The vineyards cover 37,407 hectares. Viticulture has been here from the Etruscan in the 7th Introduced century BC. The Greek historian Polybius writer (210-120 BC) mentions in his history of the Roman Empire in part on the Carthage generals Hannibal (247-183 BC), that the wines from here especially to strengthen the soldiers appropriated. The Roman author Pliny (23-79) and the doctor Andrea Andrea Bacci (1524-1600) mention the wines from this region praise.
The region is dominated by the Apennines, which here reach the Corno Grande (2,912 m) in the Gran Sasso massif and Monte Amaro (2,795 m), its highest peak. About two thirds are mountainous and hilly third. Wine is sometimes operated at high altitudes up to 600 meters above sea level at the foot of the mountain. The climate is characterized by extremes of temperature differences between day / night and summer / winter. With the red varieties dominate Montepulciano followed by Barbera, Ciliegiolo, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The most common white varieties are Trebbiano and Malvasia varieties, furthermore, there are many indigenous varieties like Cococciola, Montonico Bianco and Passerina. Two thirds of the wines are from winegrowers produced. The DOC zones:
