The most important grape varieties
DOC for red wine in the Italian region of Basilicata . The area includes the municipalities Aderenza, Banzi, Barile, Forenza, Genzano di Lucania, Ginestra, Lavello, Maschito, Melfi, Palazzo San Gervasio, Rapolla, Rionero in Vulture, Basilicata and Ripacandida in the province of Potenza. The vineyards are up almost 700 meters above sea level on the slopes of the eponymous extinct volcano Monte Vulture, fragmented into around 1,000 small holdings. Since ancient times, wine is produced here, which was already in the Middle Ages, often served at the aristocratic tables. In secco (dry) and Amabile (sweet)-developed garnet wine is sorted to 100% from the Aglianico grapes. There is also a sparkling wine. The alcohol-rich variant of Aglianico del Vulture Superiore was elevated to DOCG in 2011. See also Aglianico del Taburno .
