Historic winery in the German wine-growing area of Franconia in the city Wuerzburg with the full name of "Citizens' Hospital of the Holy Spirit." The patrician John of Würzburg Steren (1270-1329) introduced a property at its current location for the recording of nursing care available, and founded the Foundation. The official establishment of the "New Hospital" (later renamed "Civil Hospital") took place in 1316, what then of Pope John XXII. (1244-1334) in 1320 was confirmed in documents. The donor's family pledged as collateral for 13 Morning vineyards. Today, the winery owned by the "public foundation" and is headed by Robert Haller. Over the centuries it grew to its present size. The vineyards cover 110 hectares of vineyards, of which about 100 are in production. These are located to within 80% of the Würzburg city limits in the individual layers Abtsleite , inner bar , Pfaffenberg (single location, Germany) and Stone (single location, Germany) in the Stone Harp exclusive possession. There are other components including the individual layers Marsberg , Pfülben and Devil's Cellar (Randersacker), sunshine (Veitshöchheim) Scharlachberg (single location, Germany) (Thüngersheim), and Chapel Hill (Frickenhausen).

Unusually for the region Franken Riesling with just under one third of the most common variety (30 ha), followed by Silvaner (27 ha), Müller-Thurgau (10 ha), Bacchus, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Rieslaner, Domination, Gewurztraminer, Scheurebe and Blaufränkisch. The vineyard is on Dense planting placed. It is semi-natural wine with restrictive fertilization practices. The counting of the largest German cellar has a capacity of two million liters of wine and includes over 200 oval oak barrels with 700,000 liters capacity. In these the best qualities of Riesling, Sylvaner and Pinot varieties are fermented and expanded with subsequent yeast storage. The red varieties generally mature in wooden barrels.

Then they are consistently in the famous Bocksbeutel filled with the distinctive emblem Bürgerspital-shoulder (the civil hospital is considered the "birthplace" of these special bottle shape). In the basement of the Civic Hospital wines are from four centuries, the oldest is a Würzburg Stone (single location, Germany) from 1540. Thus, a bottle was in 1961 (at the age of 421 years) from the wine writers Hugh Johnson, Hugh and tasted "as still alive," found. A wine from this location was one of the Favorite wines of Johann Wolfgang von Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749-1832). Another lover of the wines was also stone-Kurt Tucholsky (1890-1935). The annual production is about 900,000 bottles. The winery is a founding member of the VDP (Association of German VDP).
