The appellation is an enclave within the AC Coteaux du Layon wine region in the Loire . It covers some 130 hectares of vineyards on the three south-facing slopes Beauregard, Fesles and above the village of La Montagne Thouarcé. The long-lived wine is considered one of the best sweet wines of France. It is made mostly sorted out nobly rotten grapes from the vine Chenin Blanc. The income limit is low, the alcohol content must be at least 13.5% vol. Known producers include Château de Fesles, Château la Fresnaye, Château la Varière, Domaine de la Croix des Loges, Domaine Godineau, Domaine Les Grandes Vignes, Domaine des Petits Quarts, Domaine du Petit Val, Domaine de Terre Brune and La Ferme de la Sansonnière. A second enclave within Coteaux du Layon appellation, the wine is of a similar Quarts de Chaume .
