The appeal lies to the west of the French wine-growing region of Savoy . The former VDQS area was called until 1989 Vin du Bugey, and was classified in 2009 as AOP. The vineyards cover 450 hectares in the department of Ain. In the Middle Ages the area was one of Burgundy and was under the auspices of Roman Catholic religious orders is an important wine region. The white wine is blended from Chardonnay, Roussette, Aligote, Mondeuse Blanche Jacquère, Pinot Gris and Molette. Red and rose wines are made from Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Poulsard Mondeuse Noire, and a maximum of 20% Chardonnay, Roussette, Aligote, Mondeuse Blanche Jacquère, Pinot Gris and Molette.
The five communities Cerdon, Machuraz, Manicle, and Montagnieu Virieu-le-Grand may add their names to the Bugey. The name Vin du Bugey mousse flaschenvergorene applies to sparkling wines, and the name Vin du Bugey pétillant for sparkling wines. Both the municipality may add the name Cerdon. The designation applies Roussette du Bugey white wines from the varieties Roussette and Chardonnay. The communities Anglefort, Arbignieu, Chanay, Lagnieu, and Montagnieu Virieu-le-Grand may add their names. Well-known producers are Caveau Bugiste and Domaine Monin.
