The most important grape varieties
The region (Italian Campania) Naples, with its capital located in the southwest Italy along the Tyrrhenian coast, close to the "boot instep." Southern are only Apulia east of it, and Calabria and Sicily . It is one of the oldest wine regions of Italy. As early as 1000 BC, was founded here and in neighboring Calabria Greek colonies and settlers named the area Oinotria. Later, the Romans perfected the wine and the area called "Campania Felix" (Happy Land), because here the wine due to the volcano and the abundant sunshine and Schwemmlandbodens thrives best. Campania is famous for its wine and the best of Ancient wines of the Roman Empire, such as Caecuber , Falernian and Surrentinum were obtained from the slopes of Vesuvius, Sorrento and the islands of Capri and Ischia. The Roman poet and author Horace , Pliny and Virgil raved about this wine. The 79 BC destroyed by the Vesuvius eruption City Pompeii developed into a wine trading center and was the main supplier of Rome. Even in the 16th Century, described the wines from the Kingdom of Naples as the best in Italy. With the fall of the "Kingdom of the Two Sicilies" 1860 then began a decline that is now catching up slowly.
The vineyards cover 28 100 hectares of vineyards. The vast majority is on the mainland, but there are also small areas of the two small islands Capri and Ischia . The Mediterranean climate with the influence of the nearby sea, the sun-drenched slopes, the protective mountains and the volcanic soils provide, especially in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento an almost ideal base for wine. Due to the poverty in this region, the weak population density in the interior and devastation caused by earthquakes in the 1960s is not fully exploited. For the most part red wines are produced. In particular, the red variety Aglianico delivers full-bodied, intense color and aromatic red wines. This is the only DOCG wine from Campania Taurasi pressed. Other important red wines are Sangiovese, Primitivo, Barbera, Greco Nero and Piedirosso. The main white grape varieties are Asprinio, Biancolella, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco Bianco and Forastera. Only about five percent of the production accounts for DOC wines. Of these, more than half of the famous family Mastroberardino . The DOC / DOCG areas:
