Castelão Francês
The red variety is from Portugal, the second major name is João de Santarém. It is probably a natural hybrid between Cayetana Blanca x Alfrocheiro Preto . It is equipped with over 20,000 hectares of vineyards, the most common Portuguese red wine and widespread here. Synonyms are Bastardo castiço, Bastardo Espanhol, Castelão, Castelão Portugues, João Mendes, João de Santarém, Moreto, Morrágua, Mortágua, Olho de Llebre, Periquita, Periquito Piriquita, Santarém, Trincadeira and Trincadeira Preta . Relevant portion of the spread was José Maria da Fonseca , in the south of Lisbon, founded the Azeitão Now one of the largest Portuguese wine producers in 1834 and re-introduced this variety in this area from the north. The first vines of which he sat on a vineyard named Periquita. As a result, the wine was so successful in this position, that the variety has been popular as well under this third main name.
