Area in the hills southeast of Rome Albana between Via Casilina and the famous Via Appia Antica, the Italian Lazio . Formerly stood on the hill each a castle that had to be soft in the magnificent palaces of the Renaissance cardinals and nobles. The fertile soil of the slopes has been used for centuries for making wine. Today there are about 7,000 hectares, extending to the outskirts of Rome (some vineyards are within the administrative boundary of the city). Three-quarters of them are situated around the large, extinct volcano Tuscolano to recognize its crater lakes Albano and Nemi still are. The soil consists mainly of weathered basalt and clay vulkantuffhaltigem with rich content of potassium and phosphorus. In this area there are seven zones DOC Colli Albani , Colli Lanuvini , Frascati , Marino , Montecompatri-Colonna , Velletri and Castelli Romani (see below). The predominantly white wines are made mostly of various Malvasia and Trebbiano varieties, with shares of indigenous varieties.

The DOC Castelli Romani area is for red, rosé and white wines. The area includes 20 municipalities in the province of Rome (including the city itself), and partly the communities Aprilia, and Cisterna di Cori Latia in the province of Latina. The Bianco is blended in any mixture of Malvasia Bianco, Malvasia puntinata, Trebbiano, Trebbiano di Soave Trebbiano Trebbiano Giallo Verde (70-100%), and any other permitted white varieties. The Rosso (also called Novello) in any mixture of Cesanese, Merlot, Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Nero Buono (at least 85%), and any other permitted red varieties (15%) were produced. The Rosé is either from the well for the Bianco and Rosso used white and red varieties produced, or only roséfarben vinified from red grapes. All three types of wines are aged in Secco and Amabile and produced as a sparkling wine.
