The most important grape varieties
One of the 17 autonomous regions of Spain and historic landscape (including Old Castile, Castilla y Leon Spanish) with some 66,000 square kilometers in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, also known as the "Land of Castles". This was once the border region between the Christian and Muslim world, so here are a lot of border fortresses built. It is considered the heartland of Spain today. In 1492 the Moors were driven out and now instead of Burgos in the north of Valladolid became the capital. That they remained until 1561, then elected King Philip II (1527-1598) in the so-called Madrid to New Castile. In this extremely eventful 16th Century was a golden age of wine by the needs of the royal court and the conquered provinces in the new world. Today is produced predominantly red, the dominant grape varieties are the red Mencia, Garnacha (Grenache) and Tinto del Pais (Tempranillo) and the white Verdejo, Viura and Palomino. As a DO are the areas Arribes del Duero , Bierzo , Cigales , Ribera del Arlanza , Ribera del Duero , Rueda , Tierra de Le贸n , Tierra del Vino de Zamora and Toro classified.
