The most important grape varieties
The local appeal lies to the southwest of the area Touraine French wine-growing region in the Loire . It is named after the medieval city. Above Chinon was a castle on a rocky outcrop on which met in 1429 Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431) for the first time with King Charles VII (1422-1461). A white wine from the variety Chenin Blanc was the favorite wine of the famous Franciscan monk and poet Francois Rabelais (1495-1553). It denounced the evils in Church and State in relentlessly satirical manner of his principal work is the adventure novel "Gargantua and Pantagruel" (see also Citations ).
The terraced vineyards with gravel, sand and limestone soils cover 2,200 hectares of vineyards and are located at the confluence of the Loire and Vienne. The most developed wine in oak barrels is made from Cabernet Franc (here Breton) and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). In small quantities it is a rosé from the same varieties and a white wine made from Chenin Blanc. Well-known producers are Alliet Philippe, Bernard Baudry, Domaine de Bel Air, Christophe Berton, Domaine du Carroi porter, Couly-Dutheil, Château de la Grille, Charles Joguet, Jean-Maurice Raffault and Domaine du Raffault.
