The most important grape varieties

DOC for dry red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region Calabria . The zone includes the eponymous communities Ciro and Ciro Marina (the Classico area), and Crucoli and Melissa in the province of Catanzaro. The core area has had a very long history and was as the Greek Krimisa (Cremissa) identified, which was later baptized and finally ZrO Ciro. According to legend, a red wine was served from here in ancient times, the Olympic champions. He also was allegedly transported from the athlete during training in amphorae from the bales to the toe of the Italian boot. He was (and this is still the case today) to be especially rich in body and alcohol. The Bianco is made from Greco Bianco (90-100%) and Trebbiano Toscano (up to 10%). Rosso (only this may, if it comes from the core area, leading to the label name Classico) and Rosato are from Gaglioppo (95-100%), and eventually the white Trebbiano Toscano and / or Greco Bianco (up to 5%) produced . The Rosso may be at 13.5% alcohol content Superiore and two years of aging, reserve call. The DOC wines of the neighboring Melissa are very similar.
