Costers del Segre
Named after the river Segre DO is in the Spanish province of Lleida in the region Catalonia and was classified in 1988. There are extreme variations in temperature, high solar radiation and low rainfall. The vines are about 4100 hectares. The birth of this DO struck in 1914, when Manuel Raventós began to invest in the former desert-like dry zone by artificial irrigation systems and embankment vineyards and later the great winery or the Spanish most unique winery Raïmat (owned by the Cava house CodornÃu ) founded. The DO consists of four sub-zones Artesa, Les Garrigues and Vall de Riucorb and separated from the smallest lying Raimat. The red wines from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha (Grenache), Monastrell, Pinot Noir, Samsó, Syrah, and Ull de Trepat Llebre (Tempranillo) grapes. The most common white varieties are those for Cava approved (eg, Parellada, Xarel-lo), which can be produced here as well. Furthermore, there are smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño.
