The birth of this DO struck in 1914, when Manuel Raventós began to invest in the former desert-like dry zone by artificial irrigation systems and embankment vineyards and later the great winery or the Spanish most unique winery Raïmat (owned by the Cava house Codorníu ) founded. The DO consists of four sub-zones Artesa, Les Garrigues and Vall de Riucorb and separated from the smallest lying Raimat. The most common white varieties are those for Cava approved (eg, Parellada, Xarel-lo), which can be produced here as well. Furthermore, there are smaller amounts of Sauvignon Blanc and Albariño.
