The most important grape varieties
Far the largest appellation in the wine growing region Roussillon , the entire department of Pyrenees-Orientales covers. The vineyards yield 8,800 hectares of vineyards in 125 communities. Red wine and rosé must be blended from at least two main types and a minor places. As the main varieties are Carignan (maximum 60%), Grenache Noir, Cinsault and Llladoner Pelut. In addition to the varieties Syrah, Mourvedre and may not exceed a maximum of 20% Macabeo. The white wine is made from Macabeo, Malvasia de Roussillon (Tourbat), Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle and Tourbat.
In the north of the higher classified area Côtes du Roussillon-Villages is located at 25 municipalities; Caramany , Latour-de-France, and Lesquerde Tautavel are classified as Cru and must display the name. The appeal is valid only for red wines, the rose and white wines should be declared as Côtes du Roussillon. The grape mix is similar, there are only 15% required by Syrah and Mourvèdre. Well-known producers are de CV Baixas, Château de Canterrane, Château La Casenove , Château de Jau, CV Catalans, Domaine Cazes Freres, Domaine des Chenes, Domaine Forca Real Domaine Gardie, Domaine Gauby , Domaine du Mas Camo, Domaine Piquemal, Domaine Sarda -Mallet, the Domaine Les Maitres Vignerons de Schistes and Tautavel.
