The most important grape varieties
The region with its capital Bologna is located in northern Italy . It stretches from the Adriatic Sea in the east with the area in Romagna to the inland region lying to the west Emilia. In the north of the Po is the border with Lombardy , in the south the Apennines form the nearly 300-kilometer border with the region Liguria and Tuscany . The western part of Emilia was divided into the duchies of Parma and Modena, which was a constant bone of contention between the Habsburgs and Bourbons. The name is derived from the Via Emilia, which was built 187 BC by the Romans to connect the two cities of Piacenza and Rimini. The eastern part of Romagna was for centuries the Papal States, but the original name of Romania is already in the Lombard period. In the highly fertile Po Valley today, many agricultural products are produced. Modena is famous around the Balsamic produced according to centuries-old tradition. The provinces of Reggio Emilia and Parma are also home to the famous cheese Parmigiano Reggiano, the real Parmesan.
The vineyards cover 61 266 hectares of vineyards. Two thirds are in the large alluvial area, the best growing areas are located but in the hilly area on the southern border at the foot of the Apennines. The most common white grape varieties are the varieties Trebbiano Romagnolo and Toscano, Malvasia di Candia, Moscato Bianco, Ortrugo and Sauvignon Blanc. The most common red wine varieties are Sangiovese di Romagna, Barbera, Bonarda and Lambrusco. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc are grown more. But there are still many indigenous varieties. Emilia is mainly due to the mostly sparkling red and rosé wines from different varieties of Lambrusco known, largely as a palatable and produced young to drinking mass-produced. In Romagna characterize the reds from Sangiovese style. The first classified as DOCG white wine was the Albana di Romagna from the same grape variety. The DOC wines make up just under 15% only.
