The most important grape varieties
DOC (including Grave del Friuli) for a wide range of red, rosé and white wines in the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia . The zone covers an area crisscrossed by many rivers, with about one hundred communities in the two provinces of Pordenone and Udine. The name is derived (as in Graves from Bordeaux in) due to the prevailing gravel and boulders containing alluvial soil in the valleys of the rivers Judrio, Livenza, Meduna, Natisone, Tagliamento and Torre. With some 6,500 hectares it is the largest DOC, here are two thirds of the total amount and about half of the DOC wines of the region produces. The area extends from the level at Livenza (border river to the west adjoining region Veneto ) To the east adjoining eastern hills of Friuli DOC. The eastern part is cooler and wetter than the west with a maritime climate. The best wines come from the broad valley of the Tagliamento with barren and kieshaltigem ("Magredi" above) ground.
