In the 1960s savaged the traditional positions relative to the Heidelberg Castle. The high amount of work in the extremely steep slopes did not count anymore. In 1998, the vineyard has been reactivated. The individual layers are called Heidelberg Castle, Roof projection , Dormenacker, Holy Mountain, Herrenberg and Whether sunny side of the bridge .
Of 13 until the middle of the 18th Century, Heidelberg was the seat of the Count Palatine of the Rhine. In the basement were stored in barrels for a total of 700,000 liters of wine, many of the hard-drinking inhabitants of the castle. A wine cellar management led by the Royal Festival Hall with room for 500 guests, with a hand pump, the wine was pumped up. With festivities around 2,000 liters of wine per day were needed. A diary entry of the hard-drinking Elector Friedrich IV of the Palatinate (1574-1610) of 9 July 1598 continues to live in a popular drinking song: Angry rolled over in bed, Frederick Elector of the Palatinate, against all etiquette, he shouted lustily: Like yesterday, I came to the nest? Am, it seems, again gewest full. He drank himself to death and died at the age of 36 years. The castle is the barrel in the world's largest , was built in 1751 from 130 oak trees. It has a length of 8.5 meters, a diameter of 7 meters and holds 221 726 liters of wine. It was mixed up with colorful red and white wines filled, but this occurred only three times because it was never close.
According to legend, the Elector Charles Philip (1661-1742) one only about a meter tall, but dwarf brought 100kg of Tyrol, the court jester made him and asked him if he could drink up the great barrel alone. This is said to have replied in Italian: "Perché no" (why not). Hence the name of the guardian appointed to draft Perkeo arose. Apparently he was drinking in a day 20 to 30 liters liquid, especially wine. He probably suffered from a congenital ADH disease or diabetes insipidus (Wasserharnruhr) with increased urinary excretion and increased thirst with increased drinking. Supposedly, he had to drink 15 bottles of wine a day, or he was whipped. Perkeo was the first time in his eighth decade of life sick. A doctor advised him urgently on wine consumption and recommended to drink water. Despite great skepticism Perkeo took this advice and died the following day. After he is the inn called "Zum Perkeo" in the city center.
