Herold August
The German agronomist and vine grower August Herold (1902-1973) graduated from an agricultural program at Hohenheim. After working for the State Viticulture and Management at the Imperial Biological Institute for Agriculture and Forestry in Naumburg Saale in 1928 he took over the leadership of the Württemberg Institute for Grapevine Breeding and Rebenpfropfung in Vineyard . After the Second World War 1945-1964 Herold led his former business, which was incorporated in 1947 in the National Training and Research Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture vineyard. There he devoted himself particularly to the conservation and breeding clones of the old-Wuerttemberg quality grapes and was also instrumental in the areas of finishing , adaptation and grafted active propagation. Herold has created many breeding lines and new breed such as Dornfelder , Hegel , Helfenstein , which was named after him Heroldrebe , Hölder , Jewel , Kerner , Ruling , Silcher and Sulmer . For his successful work he has received numerous honors, including the German Federal Cross of Merit.
