The most important grape varieties
The smallest with only 427 hectares of vines growing region Germany is nestled between the river Neckar, Rhine and Main rivers in the protection of the Odenwald. The largest portion extends along the Rhine. Even the Romans operated vineyard and put the "Via strata montana" (Mountain Road) to. The earliest documentary mention of a vineyard dates back to 756 in Bensheim. The climate is mild, which Emperor Joseph II (1741-1790) led to his return from the coronation in Frankfurt following euphoric exclamation begins here Germany, to be Italy. The production area is in the two areas geliedert Umstadt (Odenwald wine island) and Starkenburg, in three major locations and in 23 individual layers. The communities and their individual layers:

This provides optimal conditions for growing grapes and especially the Riesling. The soils are mainly weathered granite, sandstone and quartz porphyry with varying levels of Lössanteil. The quantity produced is 0.5% of the total German production is so low that most wines are enjoyed in the area itself. Well-known producers are Bergsträßer wine (the co-managed 60% of the region area), Hessian State Wine Domains , H. Freiberger and Simon-Buerkle . With 80 percent of the white wines clearly dominate.
