The appeal lies in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the southwest of Wine Country Southwest France . Already in the 14th Century were the decision of Parliament Navarre The vineyards of this area as a special vineyards (crus) are defined. By the way Jurançon end of the 1930s was classified as one of the first French areas as AC. The fact is that the wine Jurancon established as a standard for solemn ceremonies of the French royal family. He was then produced in red and white. The phylloxera destroyed the end of the 19th Century for the most part, the vineyards, but after a restock was carried out with the old varieties. The Jurançon has been widely exported to Holland and to America. The French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (1873-1954), author of "Cheri" and "Gigi", wrote of him: "As a young girl I made the acquaintance of a prince - fiery, domineering and treacherous as any great seducer: Jurançon. ". This contributed to the fame of the wine.
The vineyards are on south-facing slopes throughout in 300 to 600 meters above sea level with a relatively cool climate. The vines grow up to two meters in the training system educated Espalier. This civilization protects the soil frost. The long, sunny autumns provide a very late harvest well into December. The sweet Sauternes wines like the traditional version Jurançon is a concentrated, sweet white wine made from overripe grapes and dried (see also Passerillé ). This is particularly well suited to small-berried, thick-skinned grape Petit suited to the extremely low income (often only 15 hl / ha, are permitted 40 hl / ha) yields. Only under these conditions may result in a high-quality sweet Jurançon. The heavy wine has a nice, balanced acidity and is very durable. As a separate AC in 1975 was classified Jurançon sec. This is a dry-developed variant of the varieties Gros Manseng and Courbu. This wine can be produced in weather conditions less favorable years and accounts for roughly three-quarters of the production. Both wines have a characteristic greenish glow that deepens with age yet.
