The Austrian wine region is one of four of the federal state of Burgenland , and covers 7649 hectares. It is named after the 320 km ² and 36 km long basin. In the vernacular, the area is mostly "Seewinkel" as referred to, because it is angled conforms to the lake. From the north of the province, the area extends to the north and along the entire eastern shore of lake-to Hungary border. The "Seewinkel Wine Route" starts at Neusiedl am See and runs along the Hungarian border, past the nature reserve "Long paints" and goes back to Neusiedl.

Like all Waters of Lake Neusiedl exerts a very positive effect on the wine. The climate is characterized by Pannonian and continental influences, the great Lake Neusiedl has climate control and act in the fall in conjunction with the Seenebeln occurring as a heat store. The Blend is based on the annual survey conducted in 2009 Weingarten. Compared to the last survey in 1999, the proportion of red wines has risen from 25% to 50%. The once common in Burgenland Grüner Veltliner grape was almost reduced by half and the Riesling by over a third. Especially the red varieties Blaufränkisch (71%), Zweigelt (58%), St. Laurent (122%), Merlot (830%), Cabernet Sauvignon (93%) and Pinot Noir (113%) have increased.
