The appeal lies to the west of the wine region Provence . It forms a small enclave within the range of Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , under whose name the wines from the classification in 1995 were produced. They can be considered as a Grand Cru with stricter regulations. The vineyards on the hills of the Alpilles south of Avignon include 300 hectares in six parishes. The red wine is blended from Grenache Noir, Mourvedre and Syrah, and a maximum of 40% Cinsault, Counoise, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Rosé is composed of Cinsault, Grenache Noir and Syrah, and a maximum of 40% Counoise, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre.

The whites were under the appellation Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence produced, until in 2005 a rule change. For the whites, the varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Ugni Blanc and Vermentino approved. Another landmark change was that the first French appellation wines now only exclusively from biodynamic viticulture are allowed. Known producers Mas de la Dame Mas de Gourgonnier, Domaine Olivier d'Auge, Domaine de Trevallon and Domaine de la Vallongue.
