Mâconnais

The river to the city of Macon notified Sâone lying area with about 5,400 hectares is one of the region Burgundy . The Roman poet Ausonius (310-395) mentioned the wines from this region. In the 11th and 12 Century planted here Cistercian on a larger scale vineyards. The area became famous in 1660 when the winemaker Claude Brosse supplied wine to Versailles, where a Mass at the French "Sun King" Louis XIV (1638-1715) attracted attention by its size. The king spoke to him, tasted his wine after the show and was so thrilled that the Royal Court was regularly supplied with it. The area extends along the Sâone in a 15-kilometer-long strip. There is also a place called Chardonnay , suggesting that the variety could come from this area. The Mâconnais is best known for juicy white wines from Chardonnay, with shares of Aligote, Pinot Blanc, which cover about two-thirds of the vineyards. The red wines are made from the Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes.

The comprehensive regional appellation Mâcon is for red, rosé and white wines. Wines with a 1% higher alcohol content by volume (11 instead of 10) must be called Mâcon Supérieur (which is rarely used). The appellation Mâcon-Villages is only for white wines in 44 municipalities. These are, for example Azé, Chardonnay (alleged origin of the grape), Clessé, Grévilly, Lugny, Peronne, Prissé, and Sologny Viré. The grapes come from a single location may be replaced by the Villages place names. The appellation Mâcon with attached place names is for red and rosé wines. It differs from Mâcon-Villages by a partial selection of different places, these are as Mâcon-Braye, Mâcon and Mâcon-Davayé Pierreclos. An alternative for AC Mâcon white Pinot Chardonnay Macon.
