The most important grape varieties
Ancient Macedonia (Macedonia grch., Makedonía) on the northwestern edge of the Aegean was a kingdom in northern Greece and went on under King Philip II (359-336 BC) as a great power. This ruled almost the entire Balkan peninsula. His son Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), Macedonia served only as a base for his campaigns. The Macedonian kings were known for their drinking ability and Alexander was allegedly killed in a drinking contest by a follower. In the year 167 BC, the empire collapsed and fell under Roman rule. In the division of the Roman Empire was defeated in 395 the Byzantine Empire to the province. After an eventful history, the area 1913 between Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria and in 1947 between Greece and Yugoslavia split.
