The white variety is a new breed between Seyve Villard 5276 (Seyval Blanc) x (Riesling x Pinot Gris). The crossing was made in 1960 by Dr. John John Zimmerman (1907-1998) at the National Institute of Viticulture Freiburg (Germany) (Baden-Wuerttemberg). The name derives from the borough Merzhausen from Freiburg, where the resident of the Merzhauserstrasse Institute owns several vineyards.
