After the city designated viticulture area (including Metsovo, grch. Metsobo) in the Greek region Epirus . It lies east of the capital city of Ioannina, near the border with Albania . The area is not classified, the wines are sold under the name Metsovitikos Topikos Oinos (country wines). Wine is here since the mid-18th Century operated. The vineyards are located 900-1100 meters above sea level, making them the highest in Greece . As a special feature, there is also a very popular ski area. From the 1960s was a rebuild of the wine and it was first planted international varieties. As a pioneer in this respect the later Greek foreign and defense minister Evangelos Averof applies (1910-1990), whose late-1950s winery founded in 2002 with Strofilia for today's most important producers been merged. There are international varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, grown Merlot, Syrah and Viognier. Furthermore, there are also many indigenous varieties such as Agiorgitiko, Alpoura, Bekari, chlorine, Giatrou, Glykopistrovo, Lefko, Roditis and Vlachiko.
