The most important grape varieties
Small-growing region in Germany with a cultivated area of only 458 acres. It extends mostly in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate by Oberdollendorf at Königswinter across from Bonn to the north of Bingen in part on both banks of the eponymous middle reaches of the Rhine . Only a relatively small area located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. In the heart of the beautiful river scenery is the wine-growing town of Koblenz. The vineyards have the Romans to the founding of the cities of Cologne (Colonia) and Bonn (Bonna) justified. There was a heyday in the Middle Ages, under the leadership of the Cistercian , who built the now existing only as a ruin monastery Heisterbach above Oberdollendorf. The town of Bacharach is an ancient wine trade center. In Lower Lahnstein is the famous "Tavern on the River Lahn."
In the town of St. Goar is the famous 132-meter high Lorelei rock. The saga of the 19th Century reported that attracted here by a mermaid her lovely singing the Rhine boatmen and wrecked their boats on the slate rocks left. The poet Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) made with the lines "I do not know what it means that I am so sad," the famous Lorelei rock. She is also patron saint and symbol of the growing region. Annually on the first weekend in September is on the castle rock Rhine, St. Goar on the Lorelei rock community, the "Middle Rhine Wine Forum" and the first Saturday in May, the "Middle Rhine Wine Fair" held in Bacharach-Steeg.
The vineyards extend over 120 kilometers on both sides of the Rhine deep into the valleys. Some of them are also on the banks of the Lahn. The landscape is overwhelming beautiful area with many ruins presents itself as a narrow band of vineyards, some cling to the terraced slopes of the steep river. UNESCO also contributed to the account by the year 2002, the Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz World Heritage said. The wind-sheltered areas benefit from plenty of sunny days, the Rhine acts as an excellent heat storage. The floors consist of schist and greywacke-weathered soils, scattered Lössinseln and north of volcanic rock. More than 60% of the vineyards are on steep slopes with more than 30% slope, the rest almost only Slope . The elaborate processing results in the areas shrink continuously.
