The appeal lies in the wine growing region of the Loire at the end of the Loire in western France on the Atlantic coast to the southeast of the city of Nantes. It is one of the area Pays Nantais . The age-old winemaking tradition in the area witnessed a decree of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus (232-282). Formerly also red varieties were cultivated, but the set of extreme frost of the year 1709 to an end. Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire (until October 1995 Muscadet des Coteaux de la Loire): The area is located in the north to the left and right of the Loire and covers 280 hectares of vineyards.
Muscadet Côtes de Grand Lieu: The area is located in the southwest and covers 320 hectares of vineyards of the Loire left around the eponymous lake Lac de Grand-Lieu.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine (until October 1995 Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine): The small rivers named after two covers by far the largest area of 9,000 hectares of vineyard on the left side of the Loire. Here grow on clay soils (Vallet), as well as slate and granite slopes (St-Fiacre), the best wines. The production accounts for 80%.
The wine is sometimes referred to as "white answer to Burgundy, Beaujolais". The only grape Melon de Bourgogne is approved. From the mid-1990s with Maceration and barrel fermentation experiments. Before fermentation, the minimum natural sugar content of must 144 g / l, which corresponds to an alcoholic strength by volume of 9% in the wine.
