The most important grape varieties

Famous appellation in the eastern Greek island or region Peloponnese southwest of the port city of Corinth. Here was run in ancient times, at least 2,500 years before wine. The vineyards cover 2,100 hectares in 16 locations and are located at an altitude 250-800 meters. The area is fragmented into numerous sub-areas which, because of the large height difference also have different soils. As the best positions 450-650 meters are available with red, profound ground. In addition to Nemea is also the satellite Achaia (Archia), both of which are named after small towns. The spicy, dark-colored red wine OPAP is sorted from the indigenous species Agiorgitiko (St. George's vine) pressed. The long-keeping wine has a distinctive bouquet of cherries and currants. Because of its dark red color, it also means "blood of Hercules," named after the legendary hero who was wounded in the killing of the lion of Nemea. Increasingly, the wines in oak barrels to be expanded. Besides Agiorgitiko and international varieties like Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, as well as indigenous varieties such as Assyrtiko, Lagorthi, Roditis, Sideritis and Volitsa be cultivated. Well-known producers are Achaia Clauss , Boutari , Gaia , Katogi Strofilia , Kourtakis , Papaïoannou , Parparoussis , Elysium, Skouras , Tsantali , Tselepos .
