The name is derived from the capital named after after the historic province of France Orléans. In the Middle Ages, this was an important Weinbaugebie. It was part of the French royal domain, therefore, be served the French royal family and the city of Paris from there with wine. Wine transport to the capital has been encouraged by the short distance (130 km) and by a continuous paved road. According to legend, King estimated Henry IV (1553-1610), the Orléanais wines in abundance. Under Louis XIII. (1601-1643), the wine of Orleans, however, was gradually abandoned. After the French Revolution the province was dissolved and divided into the departments of Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, and sometimes Eure-et-Loir and Yonne. The former VDQS Orléanais area (also Vins de l'Orléanais) was in 2002 divided into two sections, which were then classified as an AOC in 2006. These are Orléans and Orléans-Cléry .
