The most important grape varieties
The cultivation area of 23 467 hectares of vineyards in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is to Rheinhessen is the second largest Germany . Until 1995 it was called the Rhine Palatinate. The nunmehrige name (Latin Palatine palace) is derived from the Count Palatine of the Holy Roman Empire, in the city of Heidelberg on 13 until the mid-18th Century resided. First indications are viticulture existed long before the Romans, Celts graves already 550 BC, found in Laumersheim and Bad Durkheim. After the Romans withdrew from the area until the 7th Century with the advent of the monasteries of wine revived. In the 8th Century are mentioned more than one hundred wine-growing villages.
In the 12th And 13 Century appeared the first vineyard designations, some of which are in the individual vineyard names have been preserved to this day. As in other German wine regions, there was the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) and subsequent armed conflict, widespread devastation and a decline of viticulture. Mid-19th Century there was a revival, but by mildew and phylloxera until the end of this century, another big slump. As a countermeasure, in 1899 in Neustadt on the Wine Route, a fruit and wine school founded to promote research and educate growers systematically.
After an eventful history, it came in the 1970s, a crisis from which the Palatinate was recovering from the mid-1980s and again provided a number of innovative winemakers, especially with high-quality Rieslings for dynamic development. The Palatinate extends south of Worms, like a belt in 80 kilometers to the French border to the north of Alsace , and from the slopes of the Palatinate Forest to the Rhine . The climatic conditions are ideal for growing grapes. There are dry, not too hot summers and mild winters. With around 1,800 hours of sun, the German Palatinate is one of the hottest growing areas. The floors are made of red sandstone, calcareous loam and clay soils, marls, Keuper, Muschelkalk, granite, porphyry and Schiefertoninseln. At the edge of hilly areas dominated by calcareous soils.
