The most important grape varieties
The Piedmont Region (Piemonte Italian) with its capital in Turin located in the far north-west Italy . With over 25,000 square kilometers of land area is only slightly larger after Sicily 's second largest. The beginnings of winemaking going back to the Celtic people of Taurini (which gave the city its name) and return to the Ligurians. The Romans knew already but Piedmontese wines (eg from Gattinara), but Pliny (23-79) not a single mention in his list of the best Ancient wines . Only in the Middle Ages, the wines were known here as the minstrels praised the excellent quality. Piedmont was for many centuries under French influence, which had an impact on the wine. The western part of the former Mark Ivrea was in the 11th Century to Mark Turin, and it came by marriage under the rule of Savoy . Mid-13th Century, first used the term "Piedmont" (Fr. pié de monte = at the foot of the mountains). The vineyards are also, significantly, largely at the foot of the Alps and Apennines on both sides of the broad upper Po valley. Only in 1815 the Kingdom of Piedmont was annexed Sardinia and finally came together with this 1861 United Kingdom of Italy.
The vineyards cover 55 118 hectares of vineyards. A large part of it lies in a hilly area in sunny slope , for which the locals term Sori impressed. The main growing areas are Asti , Carema, Canavese, Caluso, Vercelli and Novara, the mountains and the applicable principles as the best high hills of Monferrato and Langhe near Alba. There are well over a hundred varieties approved (in the 19th century there were even after an official count under 400), many of which are indigenous and not a few of them of French origin. The predominant red grape is Barbera , with around 50% of the vineyard, which is responsible for many everyday wines the base. The more important are Bonarda, Brachetto, Dolcetto , Moscato, Grignolino, Nebbiolo and Malvasia. For white wines dominate Arneis, Cortese, Moscato Bianco and Erbaluce. Increasingly, however, win Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir in importance.
In addition to the region Tuscany Piedmont provides most of the top wines of Italy and rittert with this as the first place premium wine region. About three-quarters of production is accounted for red wines. Above all, the producers of certain red wines vinified DOCG Barbaresco and Barolo, the Nebbiolo grape from the fame justified. Even with these, there were still French influence, as the "birth father" of these two wines, the French oenologist Louis Oudart Louis . In modern times, many others besides the three most famous wine maker Angelo contributed Gaja , Bruno Giacosa Bruno and Giacomo Bologna on his winery Braida significant development work in the vinification. Piedmont takes in many respects a leading role.
