The most important grape varieties

The local appellation is located on the upper reaches of the Loire south of Orleans in central France. Do not be confused with the AC Pouilly Fuisse- be confused in the Mâconnais Burgundy. The vineyards have the Benedictine already created in the Middle Ages. The area covers over 1,000 hectares in seven communes. A white wine from this area was actually one of the favorite wines of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). The name is formed from the past on the right bank of the Loire town Pouilly-sur-Loire (Which gave the name of its own AC) and the attribute Fumé (smoked). This refers to the flavoring of lime and flint soil (Fusil) and according to another version on the color of the berries, which are covered during ripening with a smoky, gray layer. The area is the stronghold of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, which grows very well here. From this an exceptional white wine unmixed with at least 11% alcohol content by volume is produced. Partial barrel fermentation and oak-expansion is practiced. The dry, fruity and long-keeping wine reaches its peak only after four to six years. He has a varied bouquet of Flint , gooseberries and asparagus. Well-known producers are Cailbourdin, Jean-Claude Chatelain, Domaine Paul Corneau, Didier Dagueneau , Château de Favray, André et Edmond Figeat, Ladoucette, Domaine District-Guyollot, Domaine Jacques Marchand, Domaine Masson-Blondelet, Domaine Dominique Pabiot, Redde, Domaine Tinel -Blondelet and Château de Tracy. Neighboring appellations are Menetou Salon , Quincy , Reuilly and Sancerre with a very similar wine Pouilly-Fumé.
