The small appellation located in the center of the French wine-growing region Provence southeast of the city of Aix-en-Provence. In the north of it lies the great appellation Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence ; range is often referred to as the Grand Cru of the area. The vineyards comprise 48 hectares of vines on a special limestone soil. This type of soil in 1948 was the main reason for building the appellation. The vineyards share the wineries Cremade Château, Château de Meyreuil, Château Henri Bonnaud, Château Simone , Domaine du Grand Côté and Domaine Dupéré Barrera.
There is a bewildering variety of types with some very rare varieties. Red and rose wines are blended from at least 50% Mourvedre, Grenache Noir (zum. 10%) and Cinsault, this Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Castets, Durif, Muscat Noir, Noir Teoulier (Manosquen) and Syrah. The white wine is made of at least 55% Clairette (different varieties), Aragnan Blanc, Colombard, Grenache Blanc, Muscat Blanc, Pascal Blanc, vinified Piquepoul Blanc (Picpoul), Terret Gris (Terret Bourret) and Ugni Blanc.
