The most important grape varieties
The appeal in the French region of Roussillon is named after the small town north of Perpignan Rivesaltes lying. It is geographically identical to the appellation Muscat de Rivesaltes and differs regarding the approved varieties. The vineyards cover 14,000 hectares of vineyards, so this is the biggest area for sweet, fortified vin doux naturel . Of the roughly one dozen different VDN's in France (including eight in the Languedoc-Roussillon) entfalllen 50% of production in the Rivesaltes. Compared with Muscat de Rivesaltes, a variety of Rebsoosrten is approved. The wine may from Muscat Blanc, Muscat of Alexandria, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Macabeo and Tourbat (Malvoisie du Roussillon), and a maximum of 10% Carignan, Cinsault, Syrah and Palomino are blended. There are many different blends, but also varietal variations.
The wines are vinified both white, and extremely dark by weeks of fermentation produces. You will be expanded in both the barrel and the tank, resulting in different flavors and colors, directions, from light to dark. The AC Rivesaltes Rancio applies to wines aging in barrels, which are exposed to sun exposure. This results in wines with the typical spicy tawnyfarbige Rancio . With the AC Grand Roussillon wines of lesser quality may be downgraded. Well-known producers are Arnaud de Villeneuve, Cazes Frères Château La Casenove , Corneilla Château, Château de Jau, Domaine Bonzoms, Domaine Boucabeille , Boudau Domaine, Domaine des Chenes, Domaine Forca Real Domaine de la Madeleine, Domaine de Nouvelles, Domaine Piquemal and Domaine Sarda-Malet. More VDN appellations of Roussillon region are Banyuls , Maury and Muscat de Rivesaltes .
