The red berry is used as a prototype of the white grape variety weißbeerigen Riesling Seen. It differs from this only by the red color of berries, genetically otherwise no discernible difference. One finds in the red Riesling often mutation to white berries, but never vice versa. So the red variety is most likely older. These are the same phenomenon as in Pinot Noir , Blanc and Gris. In the Middle Ages were often red and white Riesling in Mixed Set in the vineyards. The red variety but got slowly into oblivion. But there are again small stocks in Germany and Austria.
