The most important grape varieties
DOC for white wine in the border area of the two Italian regions Lombardy and Veneto at the south end of Lake Garda. The area is named after a battle field where the Piedmontese defeated the Austrians in 1859. The area includes the municipalities of Desenzano, Lonato, Sirmione and Pozzolengo in the province of Brescia (Lombardy), and Peschiera in the province of Verona (Veneto). The former name "Tocai di San Martino della Battaglia," which (in order to avoid confusion with the Hungarian intervention was Tokay excluded) after years of disputes in accordance with EU decision to the "Tocai di" had to be cut. The dry, sun-yellow wine with an almond and citrus bouquet is made Friulano or Tai = Friulian Tocai earlier (at least 80%) and possibly other permitted white varieties (up to 20%) grapes. There is also a sweet aufgespriteten Liquoroso with an alcohol content of 15% vol.
