The white variety with pale red berries is a new breed between Pinot Noir x Pirovano 1 (Chasselas x Muscat Hamburg Rosa). The intersection of the father was already in place in 1892 by Angelo Pirovano . The intersection of Vine Schönburger was made ​​by Dr. Henry Henry Birk (1898-1973) in 1939 at the Research Institute Geisenheim (Rheingau). The name derives from the castle Schönburg from Oberwesel in the Middle Rhine region. The species was protected in 1979. The spicy wine has a subtle nutmeg and resembles a Traminer.
