Born in Stuttgart, Robert Aldwin Schlumberger (1814-1879) was the founder of the famous Austrian wine-growing estate. He studied at Reims in the oldest Champagne house Ruinart Pere et Fils, the art of champagne making. For a Rhine cruise, he met his future wife, Sophie, gave up his secure position at Reims in 1842 and moved to Vienna. In a basement in the Viennese district of Josefov, he made the first attempts by the Lower Austrian wines. In 1843 he purchased his first vineyards as the still existing vineyard Goldeck in Bad Vöslau in the Thermenregion .
