Schlumberger

Born in Stuttgart, Robert Aldwin Schlumberger (1814-1879) was the founder of the famous Austrian wine-growing estate. He studied at Reims in the oldest Champagne house Ruinart Pere et Fils, the art of champagne making. For a Rhine cruise, he met his future wife, Sophie, gave up his secure position at Reims in 1842 and moved to Vienna. In a basement in the Viennese district of Josefov, he made the first attempts by the Lower Austrian wines.
