The white variety is among the oldest cultivated vine. In Austria and Switzerland is the spelling of Sylvaner ("y"), in Germany, the official name Sylvaner (with "i"). As with the related species Savagnin Blanc (Traminer variety) and Sauvignon Blanc , the name "Silvaner or Salviner" with the Latin word "Silva" (Eng. "Grove") and "saevum" (wild) from an origin and associated Wild Vines Clematis or derived.
