The most important grape varieties
DOC for white wine in the Italian region of Tuscany . The eponymous river Arbia, gained historical fame in 1260, when supplied the warring city-states of Florence and Siena at Monte Aperti a battle that, according to Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) ", the water stained red with blood." The area includes the municipality of Siena, as well as parts of communities Asciano, Buonconvento, Castellina in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti, Monteriggioni, Monteroni d'Arbia, Murlo, Radda in Chianti and in the province of Siena Sovicille. The dry wine is blended from Malvasia del Chianti (70-90%), Chardonnay (10-30%), and any other permitted white varieties (up to 15%). The same mixture is an amber-colored Vin Santo with 17% alcohol by volume content produced in Secco, Amabile and Dolce.
