After the 1912 meter high Mont Ventoux appellation is named in the southern section of Wine Country Rhone . Until the 2008 vintage was the name Cotes du Ventoux (the reason for the renaming is the clearer identification of the consumer). The area was made in 1951 to VDQS and finally in 1973 the AOC. The vineyards cover 7,700 hectares in 51 municipalities on the left bank of the Rhône département Vaucluse between Vaison-la-Romaine in the North and the South Apt. There was wine in the first century BC, as evidenced by excavations in Mazan. In the Middle Ages, the quality standard by the great monasteries raised especially during the presence of the Popes in Avignon from 1309 to 1414. The wine was delivered to the French royalty.
The red wine is blended from Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault, Carignan, a maximum of 30% and a maximum of 20% Picpoul Noir, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. For the rosé, there are similar conditions. The white wine varieties contains the Clairette and Bourboulenc, and a total maximum of 30% Grenache Blanc and Roussanne. By 2014, even the minor places Piquepoul Blanc, Pascal Blanc and Ugni Blanc are allowed. The income limit is generally at 50 hl / ha, the wines must be at least 11% vol alcohol.
