The most important grape varieties
The vineyard is located in southern Hungary near the border with Croatia and is named after the city (until 1999 the area was designated as Villány-Siklós). The vineyards cover about 1,800 acres of vineyards. Under a Mediterranean climate with long hot summers and mild winters, the vines grow on calcareous soils with predominantly loess and clay conditions. Around the city there are Villány especially the red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Kékfrankos (Lemberger), Kékoportó (Blue Portugal), Merlot, Kadarka , Nagyburgundi (Pinot Noir) and Zweigelt. The positive feature is a climatically most favored mountain saddle in the Villány Mountains, where are therefore powerful, long-lived red wines vinified. To Siklós are mainly white wines from Chardonnay, Hárslevelü (Linden), Olasz Rizling (Riesling) and Tramini (Traminer) produced. Well-known producers are József Bock , Csányi Winery, Attila Gere, Tamás Gere, Heumann , Horst Hummel , Malatinszky Kuria, Imre Tiffán, Tiffán Ede, Zoltán Polgár, Sauska, Vylyan, Wassmann , Wunderlich Lojzi.
