The local appellation of around 550 hectares of vineyards in the Burgundy region Mâconnais was first created in 1998 by merging the former appellation Mâcon and Mâcon-Viré Clessé to include these two (previously regarded as the best Mâcon-Villages) communities. The white wine is made exclusively from Chardonnay varietal. Well-known producers are Bonhomme, Clos du Chapitre, Domaine Philippe, Jadot , Merlin and the Cave Cooperative de Coopérative Viré.
