The estate is located in the municipality Bischoffingen (Kaiserstuhl area) in the south of the German wine-growing region of Baden (Germany) . It was founded in 1985 by Karl-Heinz Johner and his wife Irene. The aim was to produce wines in the Burgundian style. Even then, the wine was matured in barriques only be marketed as table wine in the early years. In the 1990s, was taken to California's role models in the style of a newly built monastery cellar with a circular oak barrel cellar in operation. Karl-Heinz Johner is assisted by his son Patrick, who according to studies in Geisenheim gained practical experience in Burgundy (Hubert Lignier, Comte Lafon) and Australia (Tim Knappstein). The vineyards cover 17 hectares of vineyards in seven municipal area. Outstanding individual layers are Enselberg and Steinbuck (Bischoffingen), and Eichberg (single location, Germany) (Oberrotweil). They are the white varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Auxerrois, Rivaner, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc, and the red varieties Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Dorsa, Cabernet Dorio, Cabernet Cubin, Cabernet Mitos and encore planted.

Important quality criteria are thin out (green harvest) to increase yield and reduce Defoliation . The Sauvignon Blanc and Rivaner be expanded principally in stainless steel. In the Burgundian style white wines vinified to mature part in 350-liter barriques and partly in stainless steel tanks in order to achieve a balance between fruit and wood. The tranches are subsequently equalized. The red wines are aged at least 15 months in barriques. The wines are produced in the three lines based wines (second label), ordinary wines and "SJ" (Johner selection). The latter come from the best parcels of very old vines and aged in new oak barrels.

In 2001, in New Zealand the winery in Wairarapa "Johner Estate" was founded. The first wine in 2002, came on the market. The vineyards cover about 12 hectares, with the Pinot Noir (8 acres) and Sauvignon Blanc (3 ha) and small amounts of Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Gewurztraminer, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec are planted.
