The estate is located in the municipality in the German region Dernau Ahr . Attached is the last 200 years in family-owned Gutsschenke "Hofgarten". The current owner Werner Näkel studied sports and mathematics. In 1982 he took over the family business and operational wine for now only as a sideline. This was then expanded by two acres to its present size. He started with long maceration times and barrel-expansion experiment. From the late years of the 1980s as "red wine wizard" called Werner Näkel was involved as an innovative wine makers instrumental in today's high quality level of the Ahr. In 1989, won the first of many wine prices already now. His extensive knowledge he presented as Flying Winemakers Portugal, South Africa and Gran Canaria are available.

Together with Neil Ellis was founded in 1996 in the South African wine region of Stellenbosch, near Cape Town, the winery "Zwalu" (Eng. "New Beginning") was founded. Together with Bernd Philippi (owner of the winery Koehler-Ruprecht in the Pfalz) and Bernhard Georg Breuer (owner of the winery in the Rheingau), with whom he had previously worked together on some projects, Werner Näkel founded in 2000 in the Portuguese Douro Valley, the estate "Quinta da Carvalhosa".

The Ahr vineyards cover 13 hectares of vineyards in the individual layers Herb Berg (Walporzheim) Hardtberg and parish Wingert (Dernau), and Sonnenberg (Bad Neuenahr). They are planted with the varieties Pinot Noir (10 acres), Early Burgundy, Riesling and Dornfelder. The wines aged in oak blends include "blue slate" and "S", and the dry reading of the parish Wingert and mountain herbs, all of which are filled until September the following year. A special feature is the hellgekelterte "illusion" of Pinot Noir. There are also distilled spirits. The winery is a member of the VDP (Association of German VDP).

Can probably improve a little with a bit more maturity.

Deep, concentrated aroma of plum preserves and black berries with touches of wood and spice. Juicy fruit with well-integrated spicy wood notes, quite fine-grained tannins that are slightly on the dry side, full body, persistent on the palate, lots of power and noticeable alcohol, very persistent mineral notes, develops in the glass, becoming softer and sweeter, long finish. If the fruit can overcome the high alcohol, this will develop into a superb wine.

Exceptionally deep, intense, multi-layered aroma of oak, plums, small red and black berries, cherries and minerals. Tightly woven fruit, as yet practically undeveloped, with fairly prominent, somewhat dry tannins and a dark toasty oak spice, very firm structure, tremendous power and noticeable alcohol on the palate, mineral notes very persistent, lots of grip, enormous depth of flavour, very, very long finish. Almost overpowering, but showing a depth and complexity found only in genuine Grand Crus.

Pure, firm and juicy fruit, the acidity is present and almost piquant, very full body, supple, slightly toasty notes, almost a little overripe, thus appears a little rustic in style, on the palate firm with fine-grained, noticeable tannins and excellent structure, very persistent, lots of power and noticeable alcohol, long finish. Needs time to develop.

May improve with age.

Very full body, powerful, juicy fruit with intense smoky and toasted wood components, finely-grained tannin, slightly rustic touch, noticeable alcohol, tobacco notes repeated on palate, light mineral touch, persistent, smoky finish. Gives the impression of being closed, and is currently overwhelmed by wood.

Juicy fruit, showing definite spicy wood, slightly smoky and toasted touch, lightly dusty tannin, slightly rustic style. On the palate, definite roasted notes, liquorice and some black dried fruit, noticeable alcohol level. Gains juiciness and sweet fruit if given time, good long finish.

Concentrated, juicy fruit with lots of sweet wood notes, quite fine, just very slightly grainy tannins, aromas of prunes and overripe dark fruits, some pencil-lead on the palate, mineral notes in the background, tremendous presence and persistence. Aromas reminiscent of mixed fruits steeped in rum, big body with apparent high alcohol, long, sweet, fruity finish with spicy oak notes.

Deep ruby to garnet red, just starting to lighten. The bouquet is initially subdued, but shows complex and persistent aromas of partly dried red and black berries, plums and cherries, with a a smoky, oak aroma with roast notes, with time it develops minerally spice. Highly concentrated, dense, juicy and full-bodied fruit, trmendous extract, lots of oak tannins and cold smoke, quite fine tannins, big body with clearly apparent high alcohol. However, the ripe, fleshy fruit comes through with time. What initially looks like a lack of finesse opens up after aeration, gaining complexity and depth, very persistent and with a very long finish.

Dense, juicy, almost overripe fruit, lots of spicy oak notes, firm, finely-grained tannin, very firm structure, powerful, tremendous presence and persistence on the palate, again mineral notes, deep, gripping and very, very long. Pretty much unique for this vintage. Would probably be even better if a little less oak had been used.
