The Austrian wine region is one of eight of the state of Lower Austria and covers 13 356 hectares of vineyards. With approximately 30% of the total, it is by far the largest in the country. This was already the Celts operated BC wine. In the community Stillfried of grape seeds were found Kulturrebe Vitis vinifera , which were dated to 900 BC. So it is beside the Burgenland Zagersdorf the oldest wine-growing communities in Central Europe. The Weinviertler soil types are due to the very wide-spread area, of course, very different, but it is dominated by loess, clay, bedrock and black earth soils. The climate is continental, only in the far East, there is a Pannonian influence. Summers are mostly hot and dry and winters are cold. The vineyards are located approximately between 200 and 250 meters above sea level. The best vineyards are situated in locations with a particularly favorable microclimate, which are Bisamberg, Falkenstein, Mailberg and Retz. There are a number of brand communities and vintners associations (see complete list below Lower Austria ). In 2001, the "Wine Road Wine Quarter" was founded to promote the wine culture and tourism. At a length of about 130 kilometers 150 communities with over 500 companies are involved.
